Scotland vs S Marino European Qualifiers Group I 5:00pm Sunday 13th October Hampden Park John McGinn scored a since Scotland thrashed San Marino 6-0 in the European Qualifier of Sunday in a sodden Hampden Park. Following a crushing defeat to Russia on Thursday, Steve Clarkes side were under pressure to sweep aside the words lowest-ranked side and also McGinn had them on course by the interval (12, 27, 45+1) with his first global treble. The game deteriorated in the second half on a waterlogged pitch however Scotland, that must rely on coming throughout the play-offs following March to achieve the Euro 2020 finals, continued to look for further reward and after Lawrence Shankland scored his first global goal (65), Stuart Findlay did the same (67). Stuart Armstrong added additional gloss to the scoreline with a superb late free-kick (87) after a misunderstanding as a dead-rubber match at least supplied Clarkes facet - now fourth in Group I with an overdue morale boost. Amid constant rain, in front of a huge crowd, the home side forced two corners in the first two moments prior to San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini brilliantly saved Shankland strike for one more corner which came to nothing. When McGinn got the slightest of touches on the cross , the ball going in off the post of Ryan Christie, but the protagonist was beaten. The aim of the Aston Villa midfielder eased the nerves though Simoncini refused James Forrest from range, he could only parry a Scott McTominay cross that allowed McGinn to pounce again. It was defence for San Marino since the rain continued to pour. The goalkeeper kept the deficit down again when he blocked McTominay effort but just before the interval, but McGinn grabbed his hat-trick if he swivelled to fulfill Findlays knockdown. The only danger to the house side was that the rain, together using the ball sticking with frequency over the surface that is deteriorating. And at the 65th minute, Dundee United striker Shankland got his first goal after McTominays 20-yard effort rebounded from the bar and right in his route, but Scotland were excited to extend their lead although the fixture was at risk of descending into farce. Two minutes later, Kilmarnock defender Findlay followed suit that there was time for a sixth time, albeit in circumstances and when he led into a Christie corner. Even the San Marino goalkeeper picked up the ball his box, thinking Shankland had been fouled further up the pitchbut with play explodes on, he was penalised instead and even though San Marino allure to the ball back, showed no such generosity and curled into the top corner.
