Charlie Edwards has vacated his WBC flyweight title after expressing concerns regarding making 112lbs throughout his controversial no-contest from Julio Cesar Martinez five weeks ago. Martinez was declared the winner from knockout but replays showed the blow came later Edwards had already taken a knee. The result was so overturned as Edwards kept his crown and, although WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said moments later thatan immediate rematch is going to be ordered, the Londoner has opted to move up in weight. At a letter to Sulaiman, Edwards wrote:It actually scared me how much I had been putting my health at stake and I cant risk causing harm to myself because health is the one most significant thing in life. Im gutted because I appreciate being WBC world champion and so pleased in order to maintain history as WBC flyweight world champion. I need to continue to reflect the WBC and really, really wish to push through the super flyweight rankings and convince (sic) the super flyweight title. But I wanted to allow you to know first before anyone else that I will be vacating the name to go up and struggle in the new weight. Before outpointing Angel Moreno in March edwards, who has won 15 of his 17 competitions, became world champion with a decision win over Cristofer Rosales in December last year.
