David de Gea believes Manchester United have improved since last year and says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has experienced a"massive impact" at Old Trafford. Before being made permanent boss in March, solskjaer won 14 of his 19 matches in interim charge, but the form of United tailed off dramatically and they ended the previous effort in place - 32 points behind winners Manchester City. Despite having a start to this season, De Gea - who signed up a new long term contract Monday - says the Norwegian has the entire backing of everyone in the club. "From the moment he came here he revealed his faith in me, right from moment one," the Spain international told United's official site. "I think he had a huge impact with the group. I think we won 10 or 11 games on the bounce. Everybody has faith in him, that's the thing. "The fans are behind him and he's a manager who knows the club quite well and the individuals who work here and I guess that is essential. "He shows a good deal of confidence in the younger gamers, which is very important for us so he's a very great manager." Last season was United's worst defensively because the Premier League began, conceding 54 targets and maintaining only seven blank sheets - 2 more than Huddersfield and relegated Fulham. Two of those came at Old Trafford however De Gea has equalled that tally this season and he believes the progress is equally apparent. "We have improved a lot . We are conceding fewer goals than last year," he added. "Last year we're letting in a lot of goals, but we are defending from there that the group is advancing. "Obviously, when you defend well, the staff is bound to improve. We have some wonderful players and we just have to continue improving. "The group is a lot more compact and out of that base I feel the team is simply likely to get better, and we'll be much stronger and a harder team to beat."
