Somerset's Tom Banton has won the August PCA Player of the Month award after an outstanding month which saw him score his maiden T20 century. Banton was the clear winner with 53 per cent of the general vote, ahead of team-mate Tom Abell (22 percent ) Yorkshire's Adam Lyth (13 percent ) and Derbyshire's Wayne Madsen (12 per cent). The shortlist had previously been selected by the Most Valuable Player Rankings of the PCA, together with the nominees scoring more MVP points than anybody in August. Fans who voted through the PCA and Sky Sports sites then had the final say, with Banton getting the fifth distinct participant to win the award this year, after Liam Dawson at April,'' Simon Harmer in May, Hassan Azad in June and Ravi Ashwin at July. "It is definitely a very special moment. It is always pleasant to see my name join a list of such gifted players," said Banton, 20. Although Craig Overton along with Somerset duo Lewis Gregory are flying high in the total MVP, banton was nominated for the award along with Abell. "It's brilliant having such great players around you. They have helped me much as I've come into the team which is nice for me being a youngster and now being in my first year." For Banton, the month found him rating 428 runs at an average of 38.9 across both formats with his highlight undoubtedly his maiden T20 hundred against Kent in Taunton. "I've never felt enthusiasm like it - it was somewhat mad to be honest. I struggled to sleep soundly for the upcoming few nights that I think was still due to the excitement." Banton's batting exploits saw him accrue 116.31 MVP points to the month because discipline alone - more than every other participant. Although Somerset only missed out to a Blast quarter-final sought after a closing group-stage fixture against Middlesex, the youthful wicketkeeper-batsman of the side has set his sights on additional success this year. He said:"The aim is to try and win the next few matches and raise the Specsavers County Championship name at our home ground in September. That could be the dream and that's what everybody here in Taunton wants. "When I watched a hundred in the Championship then I would be the youngest participant to receive one in every one of the major contests [overtaking Jason Roy], so personally I want to achieve that. But the main thing is merely to attempt to keep winning matches." Beyond that, if Banton maintains on generating this August, as he's done the questions regarding an England call-up will continue to get requested. The kid is keen to focus on the here and now. "Clearly the England white ball group are so robust and have just come off the back of winning the World Cup. It is going to be quite tough to break into that group but if you keep on performing you never understand. Hopefully one day I'll find that phone call. "This year I've done better at white-ball cricket but I'm always attempting to increase in the longer format too. The most important objective is undoubtedly to play Test cricket for England but I am only trying to remain realistic in the moment therefore white-ball cricket will come first." Read more:
