A Steve Smith that is brilliant double also a disastrous day in the area for England and also century. Here's the selection of the activity from Old Trafford... As Australia captured control of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford using a batting display in the last two, steve Smith struck on a double hundred, writes Sam Drury. SCORECARD | AS IT HAPPENED Having reached his Ashes century before lunch, Smith edged to slide 118 but had been gifted a chance when replays showed that Jack Leach'd overstepped. This was the first no-ball of this left-arm spinner's global career and it proved a costly one as Smith went on to make his third Test match double ton - all three of these having come against England - before he eventually fell for 211 midway throughout the evening session. Smith has scored the most Test runs using 589 runs in four innings, surpassing Ben Stokes, that now has 513 runs from 12 innings. With runs dripping from the first five overs after lunch and together with the new ball round the corner, Leach sent down a tasty delivery - chucked up and spinning away - inviting Smith into a drive that caught the border and flew low into the hands of Stokes from the slips. Since the batsman walked off, livid with having neglected to push after reaching his third century of this Ashes series, a horror washed over the England side and also the spectators in Manchester since the third umpire checked on the front-foot no-ball. The delight for the hosts turned to groans, using replays demonstrating no area of the spinner's foot was behind the line, making Smith a reprieve, along with the England side a volley from their captain - perhaps reminding his side how essential it is to take the probabilities that fall to them. Until he was eventually dismissed for 211 smith went on to a score a further 93 runs. How badly were England's Ashes opportunities damage by the afternoon session? Even though Jofra Archer had been not able to pull a hard return catch throughout the afternoon after Smith was on 68 it was that the most damage was done. Only four balls into the next session, an enormous ball from Stuart Broad was pushed by Tim Paine, on nine at the time, directly to the waiting hands of Jason Roy at moment slip only for the England man to spill a simple take - the ball ricocheting off his right hand to his left wrist and then, agonisingly for its hosts, onto the turf. A mere 27 balls afterwards, another life was seen by Leach's no-ball by giving his team a full-volleyed pep talk following their sloppy start to the semester and the England captain responded. However, Root words didn't have the desired result as Archer was denied a first wicket in the match once Paine, on 49 and desperate to deliver up his very first half-century at 11 Tests, even pulled a short ball from outside off stump to substitute fielder Sam Curran at direct mid-wicket just for the all-rounder to put down the next easy prospect. It wasn't just a potentially match-turning session, which found Australia score 124 runs since Smith continued to rack up the runs along with his skipper Paine without losing a wicket, but one that might have gone a long way. Isa Guha:"He [Smith] missed the last Test with concussion and wished to come back and show everyone just what he is capable of. This was a statement of intent. "There clearly was audacity about some of his shots through the covers; he doesn't miss out from the bad ball. There was a tricky period in the morning against Jofra Archer when he wafted at a couple out off-stump but was it, really." Michael Atherton:"England had depended , really, for enabling Smith to get off attack by providing him that simple tuck into the legside - then were happy to bowl at whoever was at the other end. That is alright but it's a pretty damning indictment if you reach that point without feeling as if you can get a man out when you are bowling. That is the genius of Steve Smith Right Now." Shane Warne:"Smith's kind is unbelievable. I really don't think he's been quite at his very best today but he played some great shots. England have hunted for different strategies to catch him out."
