England are staring down the barrel of an Ashes series loss after another chastening afternoon in Old Trafford that leaves them on the brink of defeat heading to the fifth and final day... Pat Cummins took 2 wickets to leave Australia requiring eight wickets retain the Ashes following a second notable knock from Steve Smith in Old Trafford and to win the Test, writes Sam Drury. SCORECARD | AS IT HAPPENED The world before holing out off Jack Leach as the traffic, Number 1 Test batsman made 82 declared to put Joe Root side a victory target of 383. Cummins subsequently eliminated Rory Burns and Spread from the first over as England's chances of rescuing the game plummeted using all the hosts closing on 18-2, in the final stages of the eventful day in Manchester. First ball bowled into the perfect shipping, by Pat Cummins, angling in, projecting in lineup and nipping off to only clip on the top of off-stump. England's hopes of holding out for a draw to save the Test and take the series into a decider at The Oval next week certainly rested with their skipper however, put in to face a tricky half-hour session before stumps, the hosts lost both top-scorers in the first innings to successive deliveries. Prior to cleaning Root up with the next Rory Burns third chunk was eliminated by cummins to a major edge. He is the world's No 1 Test bowler for a reason. The exact same one who has mastered the series so much: how do you get Steve Smith out? After five innings, 671 runs, a 134.20 average, five dozens of at least fifty, three of which hundreds, England are still very much not one the wiser. After a terrific hour and a half of the ball at the back end of the afternoon session, one which saw the hosts briefly fight their way back into the Exam - decreasing Australia to 44-4 in their second innings - Smith still could not be shifted. Stuart Broad bowled another excellent opening attraction, while Jofra Archer was back into bowling at blistering pace but, bar the strange play and miss, Smith lived through to tea after which rocketed throughout the gears at the night before perishing for 82, holing out in the deep off Jack Leach, in helping put up Australia's declaration. David Gower on Root's dismissal:"Oh, my word, what kind of delivery that is! Australia and also pat Cummins certainly in their best. We speak players discuss it, it is talked about by coaches. It is the ideal delivery; aim for the top off, hit the top off, with only enough motion to beat the bat - that absolute ideal for any bowler, and a body blow to the whole England team" Nasser Hussain on England's day fightback:"You find the character of a negative when they are down, which hour and a half [earlier java ], England showed that. They have been done and dusted, out of the game, they fought their way in and with only one result possible. Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad, in particular, were Exceptional." Michael Holding to a legside plan to Smith:"Six guys onto the on-side bowling to Smith? You're only allowed nine fielders and should the line you'd be bowling is on top of off-stump, you would need to have a slide and a third man, leaving you one man to patrol the entire area from point to mid-off. He be Usain Bolt but also a marathon runner to have sufficient power. That is why I say foolish."
