Liverpool bid to trademark the word'Liverpool' was reversed from the government's Intellectual Property Office. The Premier League club had expected to signature the title of the city when employed in the context of soccer services and products and insisted that their aim was to shield themselves. But, after accepting the decision of the IPO, the club's chief executive Peter Moore admitted they had underestimated the degree of resistance from dealers within the city, plus local soccer clubs and Liverpool City Council. The club said in a statement:"Liverpool Football Club will confirm its application to trademark the phrase'Liverpool' in the context of soccer services and products was unsuccessful. "The club accepts the decision that's been taken by the Intellectual Property Office, due mostly to exactly that which the official conclusion cites as'the geographic value' of Liverpool as a city in comparison to place names which have been improved by other soccer clubs in the united kingdom. "We shall, nevertheless, continue to aggressively pursue these large scale operations which seek to exploit our intellectual property and also would recommend the relevant government to take decisive action against such criminal activity wherever it is." Moore stated the club's intentions had been sincere but they'd misunderstood the implications the trademarking would have had in the local community. "We underestimated the reaction for it," Moore told the Liverpool Echo. "We'd, in very good religion, seemed at what we had been seeing on a global basis and particularly stuff that was coming in the united kingdom. "We felt obliged to protect the soccer club and had looked at other similar scenarios for clubs which had trademarked their location names in a football context, there are many examples. "We believed that on behalf of our team we had to do so, but I think that it's fair to say that we underestimated the psychological reaction to it and that's our bad." Moore stated the team had met with local companies to explain their intentions. "There wasn't any deliberate action to slide through it," he further added. "We registered and got on with our enterprise and obviously as matters unfolded the reaction was fairly fast and we instantly engaged with the individual merchants as well as the local football clubs and met together. "(We) assured them that this wasn't geared toward them and offered them legal protections for if we'd been effective." Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson tweeted:"LFC is a international brand and plays a significant part in showcasing our town throughout the world. "We have a solid connection with Peter and his staff along with the club's significance to the future of the city is without question. We'll always work together for the people of Liverpool."
